In Scandinavian traditions, a maypole, also known as a “midsommarstång” or “majstång,” is a central symbol of Midsommar, the summer solstice celebration, and is decorated with greenery and flowers, often with ribbons, and raised in a town square or open field where people gather to dance around it.

  • Symbolism:
The maypole, or “midsommarstång” as it’s known in Sweden, is a symbol of fertility, new life, and growth, representing the abundance of the summer season.

  • Decoration:
The maypole is typically decorated with greenery like birch leaves and wildflowers, and then adorned with colorful ribbons that are wrapped around it from top to bottom.
